My Favourite Firefox Extensions
Now that I have had a chance to use the most recent version of Firefox (3.0.3 at the time of this writing) I figure that this would be a good opportunity to list my favourite extensions that will help you to enhance, secure or otherwise improve your experience. Please check out my top 3 addons after the fold.
- NoScript (www.noscript.net)
This extension disables Java and Javascript to help prevent browser takeover attempts, squash advertisements and generally keep us safe online. This addon does have the impact of reducing user experience (read: a pain in the …) while getting setup, though with a little patience it make the internet just that much safer. - FastDial 2.11 (http://userlogos.org/extensions/fastdial)
This is an extension that mimics the Speed Dial feature of Opera. This allows you to create a tab of bookmarks with links and snapshots of any websites that you choose. There are a few ways to add links to the Fast Dial tabs namely right clicking on any open tab and selecting “Add to Fast DIal” or by clicking on any open slot and entering in the URL. A number of options will allow you to configure and otherwise customize. - Perspectives (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~perspectives/)
This tool has been developed by the Carnegie Mellon University CompSci department to aid users in verifying whether or not to trust a self signed certificate from an https connection. As the number of self-signed certificates goes up so does the pain involved in attempting to verify if it is safe. The system uses a notary system to keep track of the certificates being used. Check out the full details as well as install source at the CM site.
In the near future I will add on some additional plugins/extensions that I use on a regular basis. Please let me know your favourite extensions.
